Our Scotch Ale is a traditional Scottish ale and pours a dark mahogany color, with the aroma of sweet caramel and a slightly bitter finish. This ale has a semi-sweet taste, with undertones of molasses, dried fruit and toasted malt. The beer is brewed with brown sugar as well as pale and dark crystal malted barley.
Scotch Ale is believed to have originated in Edinburgh in the 18th Century. The term is used to describe a strong pale ale that uses few hops and has a very forward malt character from Scottish barley. Scottish beers are categorized by how they used to be taxed. Taxes were figured from the gravity and strength of the beer, ending up with the following categories: 60 Shilling (Scottish Light), 70 Shilling (Scottish Heavy), 80 Shilling (Scottish Export) and Wee Heavy (Strong Scotch). Schlafly Beer’s Scotch ale falls into the “Wee Heavy” classification.
