The next two weekends will showcase our two biggest festivals of the year: Art Outside from Friday, Sept. 9th through Sunday, Sept. 11th at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood and HOP in the City on Sept. 17th at the Schlafly Tap Room.
From a planning perspective, Art Outside is a marathon. Preparations start in February as we send out our call for artists. The event itself lasts for 3 days; longer than any other festival we host. Yet the crowd is leisurely. I see more families sipping on Schlafly and strolling through downtown Maplewood, and, since admission is free, people return day after day.
HOP in the City is more of a sprint - 5 hours and forty plus beers - it’s not a festival; it’s a challenge.
Art Outside invites you to browse every artists’ booth. There are over 50 of them to see, and you can feel free to compliment the artists or ask a few questions, since the artist is usually right there. Art Outside focuses on local artists selling affordable art.
HOP in the City invites you to browse every beer. Throughout the year, we save three kegs of almost every Schlafly brew just for this event. We also brew a special festival beer. This year, it is Spicy Golden Ale, a dry hopped, straw-colored American wheat ale brewed with fresh lemongrass, lemon zest and Kafir lime leaves. Tickets are currently still available online and at both breweries.
The two festivals are not completely different - both feature live music and great food, not to mention some of the best people watching on the planet; however, at Art Outside I see more kids & pets, and at HOP, it’s kilts and pretzel necklaces.
Whatever your preference, there’s no excuse to miss out on either of these events. We hope to see you there.
