If you’re a St. Louis Cardinals fan like me (as well as the majority of Schlafly beer drinkers, given our base of operations), then you’re most likely still holding onto some of the residual high that came with the Cardinals’ history making World Series win this past October. I don’t know about you, but I still can’t stop thinking about how incredible Game 6 was. I’ve even started referring to anything I think is awesome as being “Game 6.” For example, I might say, “the Coffee Stout this year is so Game 6,” or “those new jeans make your butt look totally Game 6.” You get the idea. The point is… I will never, ever, get tired of seeing this.
What perhaps many of you don’t know, is that the Cardinals defeat of the Texas Rangers in the 2011 World Series not only marked a victory for St. Louis baseball fans everywhere…but also St. Louis craft beer fans! You see, Fritz Rahr, founder of Fort Worth, TX craft brewery, Rahr & Sons Brewing Co., reached out to our own co-founder, Dan Kopman, prior to the World Series and they agreed to a simple bet based on the outcome. Cardinals vs. Rangers. Schlafly vs. Rahr. The loser of the bet had to gather a posse and go to their respective baseball team’s stadium armed with beer and swag from the opposing brewery and photograph the results.
After the Cardinals won the World Series in dramatic fashion, Schlafly co-founder and president, Tom Schlafly sent Fritz Rahr the following email of thanks and good wishes as only Tom could:
Thank you for being such good sports. I know how it feels to be on the other side of a bet like this. As Dan may have told you, we had a bet with Harpoon on the 2004 World Series, which was a cause for great rejoicing in New England, but not in St. Louis. I have already written the December column in our newsletter and the picture you send will be featured prominently. I want to add that I was very favorably impressed by the Rangers and their fans. I attended game 5 of the series against the Phillies in Philadelphia. It was a different experience from the interaction between Rangers and Cardinals fans. I’m also very familiar with the heartbreak of close losses cheered by the rest of the country. As a Georgetown alumnus I was at the final four in New Orleans in 1982 (won by UNC and Michael Jordan) and our historic loss to Villanova in 1985. I feel your pain. Kind of. Good luck with the brewery and good luck to the Rangers except when they play the Cardinals.
With the outcome of the World Series decided, we shipped off a bunch of Schlafly beer, t-shirts and hats to our friends at Rahr & Sons and they set off to Rangers Ballpark to document the moment. We present to you now, a photo gallery of Schlafly Beer being represented at Rangers Ballpark in celebration of our 2011 World Champion Baseball Cardinals. We want to extend and enormous thank you to our friends at Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. for having fun with us on this. What a great reminder of how Game 6 the craft beer community is. Cardinals fan…Rangers fan…we’re all craft beer fans.
