The "A" In AIPA Stands For American Part 2: The Untold Story

aw9r5aucqaekr3ijpg-largeToday is the 4th of July. America’s Independence Day. A day to join hand-in-hand with our loved ones and neighbors to celebrate the freedoms that we are so privileged to enjoy. For many, this is also a day to relax, listen to some John Philip Sousa, bask in a fireworks display, stoke up the BBQ, and pour yourself a cold Schlafly American IPA, the most patriotic beer in the known universe.

Last year we shared with you our proprietary brewing process for AIPA which includes aging the beer with wood from George Washington’s false teeth and conditioning each bottle in our aviary nestled atop Schlafly Bottleworks with our patented “Bald Eagle Incubation Process” (B.E.I.P. ™), but that wasn’t the whole story. There is an untold story of American IPA that has been kept secret from the world for almost 70 years…until today.

It was 1942 and Hitler’s war machine was on the march all across Europe. Hops and grains were under strict ration orders to help with the war effort, and brewers from the US and Europe were meeting each other on the battlefield instead of toasting pints. Short on ingredients and brewers, patriotic Americans both abroad and at home were low on beer and even lower on morale. It was truly beer’s darkest hour. Yet all was not lost.

Deep within a Top Secret military brewery installation hidden beneath a printing company in St. Louis, MO, our nation’s top scientists, along with the help of defecting German Braumeister, Abraham Sturzbesoffen, perfected the recipe for the ultimate beer… Code Named: Schlafly AIPA. This was to be the perfect beer, the ideal, the beer from which all other beers would be judged forever more. Immediately Schlafly AIPA was distributed on the home front and to our troops overseas and in short order, the tides of war turned.

Schlafly AIPA was exactly what America needed, when it most needed it. Sadly, German spies assissinated Braumeister Sturzbesoffen before he was able to write down the finished recipe for AIPA, and only the one batch was ever to be brewed… or so we thought.

In 2009, while removing the original turn-of-the-century boiler in the cellar of the Schlafly Tap Room, Schlafly brewer Brennan Greene came across a very old and faded document sealed within a bottle that had seemingly been buried within the foundation. While hard to make out, it quickly became clear to Brennan that the document, was in fact, Braumeister Sturzbesoffen’s original hand-written recipe for Codename: Schlafly AIPA! It’s a good thing that in addition to being adept at brewing great beer, Brennan is also a world-renowned historian specializing in World War 2 era secret US military programs, or he may have never known what he had stumbled upon. Lucky for us, he did, and at the 2009 HOP in the City beer festival, Schlafly AIPA was re-introduced to the world for the first time in 70 years!

uncle-samAnd that folks, is the untold story of Schlafly American IPA, the most patriotic beer in both written and oral history.

From all of your friends at Schlafly Beer, we wish you a spectacular, fun, and safe 4th of July. We’ll leave you today with these brave words once uttered by President Bill Pullman before climbing into the cockpit of his fighter jet to dogfight against alien war craft of far superior technology and firepower:

And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: “We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive!” Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!
