Although recent weeks have brought some actual winter weather, so far this winter has been very mild. And that means more produce at the Maplewood Farmers Market this Saturday from 9am-1pm at the Bottleworks! Or course, we’ll also have a great selection of honey, jams, jellies, meats and baked goods.
Dan Kelly started Blue Heron Orchard in 1990 when he planted 500 apples trees of eleven different varieties on five acres of land overlooking the Mississippi River in Canton, Missouri. Blue Heron has practiced organic farming since the trees were first planted and was the first certified organic apple orchard in the state of Missouri.
In addition to managing the Maplewood Farmers Market, this summer I have been involved in a national project called “Truck Farm”.
Three Rivers Community Farm is a small, chemical-free vegetable farm that was started in December 2006 by Amy Cloud and Segue Lara in Elsah, Illinois. Their mission is to provide a local source of naturally grown food through sustainable agriculture practices.
The Marcoot family has lived in the Bond-Madison County area in Illinois since 1840 when they were actually the “Markut” family. The Markuts changed their name to the Old World spelling of “Marcoot” and began raising Jersey cattle by mid-century. Seven generations of Marcoots have raised Jersey cattle and, in March 2010, the family added to their legacy by starting the Marcoot Jersey Creamery.
It’s summertime and that means two things: 1) There are lots of delicious farm fresh products available at the Maplewood Farmers Market every Wednesday from 4pm - 7 pm at Schlafly Bottleworks; and 2) American Farmland Trust’s America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest has kicked into gear and we need your votes to win!
