The St. Louis Brewers Guild Heritage Festival - A Toast To St. Louis Beer

It’s a great time to be a beer lover in St. Louis. I’m probably preaching to the choir, but I want to say it again. It’s a great time to be a beer lover in St. Louis. Quick history lesson - Beer and the brewing industry have long been deeply connected to the pulse and growth of our City. Prior to Prohibition there were over 50 breweries operating in and around the St. Louis area. After Prohibition, a handful of breweries re-opened and gave it a go, but by the late 1980’s every St. Louis-based brewery except for Anheuser-Busch had gone out of business due to a combination of the changing tastes of American beer consumers coupled with rampant consolidation and an extremely competitive national market.

Our annual Repeal of Prohibition Beer Festival at Schlafly Bottleworks is almost upon us and we couldn’t be more excited. This festival celebrates two key milestones in beer history: the anniversary of the April 7th, 1933 implementation of the “Cullen-Harrison Act” which began the march towards federal repeal of Prohibition by legalizing beer with an alcohol content of 3.2% and… the 12th anniversary of the opening of Schlafly Bottleworks, our main production brewery, restaurant, garden, and “community center” in the heart of Maplewood, MO.
