Top Fermentation: Tom Schlafly's Monthly Column
Everywhere I hear the sound of marching, charging feet, boy
Cause summers here and the time is right for fighting in the street, boy.
These are the opening lines of Street Fighting Man by the Rolling Stones, which was recorded in March and April of 1968 and was on the album Beggars Banquet. When the album was released on December 6th of that year, these words would seem eerily prescient. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King in April, cities all over America had erupted in riots. French university students had rioted in May. Violence had erupted on the streets of Chicago during the Democratic National Convention in August. In October deadly riots had occurred in Mexico prior to the Olympic Games.
While the sound of marching, charging feet might have been heard everywhere, my own political activity during the summer of 1968 was far more prosaic as I worked on Tom Eagletons first campaign for the U.S. Senate. Nevertheless, prosaic as it was, my involvement in the campaign has been documented for many generations of future historians with the publication of a photograph of me with Barbara and Tom Eagleton (among others) on the cover of the April 2008 issue of Missouri Historical Review.
