Top Fermentation: Tom Schlafly's Monthly Column
In order to correct an impression that I might have given in last months column, I want to make it clear that Harry Truman was not the only United States President from Missouri. Nearly a century before Truman succeeded to the presidency, David Rice Atchison held the office for 24 hours in March of 1849.
Atchison, a lawyer from Plattsburg, in Clinton County, was chosen in December of 1845 to be President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate, a position he held when James K. Polks term as President expired on Sunday, March 4, 1849. President-elect Zachary Taylor, who was to succeed Polk, refused to take the oath of office on the Sabbath, thereby leaving the presidency vacant. Vice President George M. Dallass term had also expired, meaning he could not succeed Polk as President. Under the law of presidential succession in effect at the time, David Atchison, as President Pro Tem of the Senate, became the President of the United States, a position he held until Monday, March 5, when Taylor was officially inaugurated. Although Atchisons status as President is disputed by some historians, it is recognized on his tombstone at his home in Clinton County.
