Top Fermentation: Tom Schlafly's Monthly Column
March 9th of this year is an important jubilee: the 50th anniversary of the Barbie Doll. Think about it. Barbie, the bane of feminists and the idol of tens of millions of young girls, is now eligible for AARP.
In the past half-century Barbie has had multiple and varied careers, including: paleontologist, NASCAR driver, veterinarian, firefighter, dentist, lifeguard, Canadian Mountie, officer in all four armed services, and President of the United States. She was the brainchild of the American businesswoman Ruth Handler, who named her after her own daughter Barbara. Conveniently, Ruth was married to Elliot Handler, a co-founder of the Mattel toy company, which introduced Barbie to the world at the American International Toy Fair in New York on Monday, March 9, 1959.
