Top Fermentation: Tom Schlafly's Monthly Column

March Madness is here.  Dozens of teams are vying for the much coveted championship of college basketball as fans all across the land argue over which conference is the most competitive.  In the midst of all this frenzy Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has managed to maintain a proper perspective, reminding all of us that academics are the true essence of the college experience.  According to Governor Nixon, the University of Missouri would improve its academic standing by dropping out of the Big Twelve athletic conference and becoming the 12th member of what would still be known as the Big Ten.  The governor specifically said that Mizzou would be in better academic company among schools like Northwestern and Wisconsin than it currently is with schools like Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.

Like Governor Nixon, I’m all for academic excellence.  That said, it’s worth noting that a fine academic reputation won’t keep a university from churning out a few crackpots every once in a while.  Consider Yale, for example. It’s a superb university that has produced some outstanding alumni over the years, including Charles Kopman, my former law partner and the father of Dan Kopman, the co-founder of The Saint Louis Brewery.  On the other hand, it was also the alma mater and academic  home of Irving Fisher, a proponent of prohibition and eugenics.
