Events are free and open to the public. Dinner and drinks are available for purchase.

Top Fermentation: Tom Schlafly's Monthly Column

The late John Ciardi once described Mother’s Day as “an unofficial holiday conceived in sentiment and dedicated to promoting the sale of flowers and greeting cards.” By contrast, Nadya Denise Suleman’s eight embryos weren’t conceived in sentiment, but rather in a Petri dish prior to being implanted with a syringe.  She bore the babies and California taxpayers bore the cost.  The unemployed single mother already had six children but apparently felt she was entitled to more.  One can imagine her walking into the fertility clinic and singing, “Octo octomom, I want to be an octomom” to the tune of “Macho Man” by the Village People.

Six days after Ms. Suleman celebrates Mother’s Day with her 14 children from various Petri dishes, lots of other Americans will be celebrating Armed Forces Day.  This is a time to express our appreciation to men and women in uniform, especially Colonel Al Hunt, the former wing commander at Scott Air Force Base who gave the order to put Schlafly Beer on tap at the officers and enlisted clubs on the base and also at the golf course. We should also acknowledge the Marine Corps, which appears to have named its new Jeep-like vehicle after this publication.  Unlike the Schlafly Growler, which is free of charge, each Marine Growler has a pricetag of $209,000 ($1,078,000 with a trailer).
